Demônios de Lazarim / Demons of Lazarim

In Lazarim, a small village with 680 residents located in the north of Portugal, once a year, the calmness of a rural area gives place to the Carnival Tuesday. Residents dress up with wooden masks and go out on the streets to play and scare other residents and tourists. The masks, carved by local artisans, are made of alder and have pre-Roman origins. Most portray demons with beards, mustaches and horns, but some of them symbolize kings, witches and animals.
